About the Igros Kodesh
A collection of published correspondence, approached here with care, restraint and full transparency.
The Igros Kodesh is a published collection of letters written over many decades. Readers have long turned to the volumes for perspective in moments of decision, difficulty or gratitude.
What are the Igros Kodesh?
Everyone meets moments in life that are hard to carry alone, when guidance and good help are needed in order to return to a settled routine. Usually these difficulties are personal: health, marriage, love, family, livelihood, a traumatic experience and the like. Through the Igros Kodesh it is possible to turn for advice, blessing and direction — with no cost at all, and with full privacy.
Over the years the Rebbe wrote thousands of letters to people who asked for his advice, guidance and blessing. The questions and the answers touch on every area of life: society, education, family, public affairs, livelihood, business, army service, art, Torah and more. In 5747 (1987) the Rebbe directed that these letters be published as the Igros Kodesh series. Twenty-three volumes have appeared since then, containing mainly letters from the early years of his leadership, with further volumes still to come.
Writing to the Rebbe as a connection
The act of writing is itself a connection to the leader of the generation, and that alone carries great blessing — even when the answer is not understood at first, and even when the salvation is not seen immediately. There are many accounts of people who followed the direction written in a letter without seeing the link to their own question, and saw help come through fulfilling it.
In matters that are hard to decide — since a person is close to himself — the Rebbe's counsel is to appoint a mashpia, a man for a man and a woman for a woman, who can look at things from the outside, or to take the advice of three understanding friends. In matters of health, the Rebbe's counsel is to consult first with a doctor who is a friend; if there is none, to seek a second opinion, and where opinions differ, to ask a third doctor and follow the majority.
When help comes, share the good news. Publicising your own salvation brings others to write as well, and in that way you help them too.
